Colour Awareness in Healing

  The importance of colour in healing.

Colour surrounds us at all times from what we wear to how we choose to furnish our homes. When we don't allow ourselves to be led by fashion trends we tend to be drawn to colours instinctively for what is most needed to soothe or stimulate our bodies for that day. Colours are formed by the refractions of light from each bend in the ray of light. All colours vibrate at a different frequency with red as the slowest and most dense up to violet with white as the highest frequency.  This corresponds to the colours of our chakras.  Each colour has the power to alter us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. 

People also use colours to match what they are doing; red and black for instance are real power colours and are often used by people in business or authority positions. Black in particular is a very protective colour and is used to reflect all forms of negativity, one reason (other than out of respect) it is often worn to funerals. Purple and gold are very popular for spiritual and ritual work.
We can be better prepared when we are out and about by having a good grounding of how colours affect us on all levels; physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually Businesses have this study down to a fine art and use colour combinations to manipulate us in ways that make us want to eat more, buy more, move through shops more slowly or prevent us from hanging around too long! This is especially effective when combined with music. To be forewarned is to be forearmed! By being aware of this and remaining focused on what we are out to achieve we can shut down our reactive behaviour and resist temptation!
Colour is a powerful tool to use in healing, as all the organs and glands of the body react to the vibrations that emanate from the various colours associated to the chakra area they are in. The kidneys react to the colour orange, while the heart responds to green. All the cells in the body also have a frequency that resonates strongly and positively when we are healthy.

When we suffer ill health or an imbalance this vibrational frequency changes and becomes distorted. When we have a problem in either of these areas we can use those colours that are of a vibrational match to boost the corresponding chakras and areas of the endocrine system to promote well-being. 

When colour is used in healing treatments, all the colours of the spectrum are utilized: red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo, and violet. Colour comes from daylight and when it is absorbed through the eyes and skin, it has the power to heal imbalances in the body physically, mentally, and emotionally. 

Also to be taken into consideration is using complimentary colours when healing, for instance when dealing with blood pressure red is ideal for raising it while blue (its opposite) will lower it.

We can apply colour awareness to our healings by:

1 We can choose crystals by the corresponding colour we need for the particular area we are healing. These can be found in many lists and books.
2 We can surround ourselves with a colour best suited to what we are doing in a particular room, by decorating, or painting the walls in specific colours to soothe, relax, energize or harmonize. For instance red wouldn't give us a restful sleep in a bedroom but it would stimulate both the appetite and mental functions in a dining room.
3 We can also give our clients or ourselves a boost by using coloured piece of cloth corresponding to the chakras colours. I use my husband's magician's silk handkerchiefs for this.  The colours are so vivid and when combined with the crystals the results are quite magical!
4 Even what we eat and drink effects us vibrationally. To obtain and maintain optimum health we should eat and drink from all colours of the spectrum. We should allow ourselves to be guided by what are body needs instead of quick fixes of junk foods. I absolutely hate bananas but every once in a while my body needs one and I feel compelled to eat it. I always find that I feel much more balanced after this.
5 We can also use colour by visualising a mist or etheric blanket of colours to reflect what is needed. Colour breathing is also wonderful for this and is also a very quick way to restore balance and harmony. A wonderful one to do when outside and in the presence of a rainbow!
6 When we synergistically combine colours with herbs, oils and crystals we create something new and very powerful as each enhances the other. We can do this by using coloured spray bottles and adding to them blends of essential oils, herbs and crystals. Making sure that each one is of the same vibrational frequency. 
As each day also has its own colour associated with it, to be really precise you can even mix the colour blends on the correct colour day.
Sunday - gold, yellow, yellow-orange, neon shades of orange and yellow & hot pink
Monday - white, silver, pale blue
Tuesday - red, black, scarlet, orange
Wednesday - purple, orange
Thursday - purple, royal blue, green
Friday - pink, aqua
Saturday - black, deep purple

5 ways to attract more positivity into your day

Are you feeling stuck in a rut? Does each day feel like another round on the treadmill? Even if you can’t change your day to day routine, you are entitled to have a little fun each day, so let’s look at how we can lighten the load!

The best way to get the most out of your day is by doing things with a positive attitude, and by focusing on the immediate job at hand.  If we looked ahead and saw the towering pile of pots we would have to wash, or clothes we would have to iron in a lifetime, it would be enough to make anyone take to their bed! 

So for today, just focus on the chores that need your attention today.  Yesterday is over and done with, you did your best and nothing can change that now. Tomorrow has yet to be born, and no matter what you expect, it will be magically filled with all kinds of unsuspecting surprises. 

A day rarely goes exactly as we plan it to, so be open and flexible and remember that a positive attitude attracts positive things, people and events to you, just as having a negative attitude will attract negativity to you. No matter what the day holds we can always get through it, the sun will set today and rise again tomorrow. 

A positive attitude will make you feel happier, more positive and healthier too and open up more opportunities and possibilities, allowing you to move in harmony with the flow of the universe and not against it.

So today, whether you have a few minutes or a few hours to spare, give yourself permission to enjoy yourself, it isn’t being selfish, and it isn’t being lazy, it’s about putting YOU first! Only when you are at your best, can you give your best to others.

1. Have an attitude of gratitude; show gratitude and a positive attitude to everyone you meet. Make time to have a quick chat with your postman/woman, delivery person or cashier, smile at a passer by. The fastest way to attract those good vibes is to give them out first! Help out at a charity or fundraising event, volunteer to be a visitor at your local hospital or hospice. 

By helping others you are attracting more positivity into your life, the more you give, the more will be returned to you, and usually when you least expect it! 

Call on a friend or a neighbour, spend some time in their company just listening to them, especially if this is someone who is elderly, housebound or lives alone. If you can’t get out and about yourself, make time for a sociable phone call or write a cheery letter. 

Spend time with people who make you feel good, just for the fun of it.

2. Declutter your life; a wonderful way of attracting positive energy into your life is by stirring up stale, stagnant, negative energy and moving it out of your life. Get rid of anything you no longer use, listen to, watch or wear, pass it on to friends or relatives or donate to charity and let someone else benefit from it.

Look at negative cycles in your life; do you eat the same meals over and over again? Do you watch the same TV programmes or visit the same places? Are you still hanging onto items, ideas or beliefs that were never actually yours? 

When we end a relationship, it is easy to carry on as if they had never left, in the same old routine, doing things that we never particularly liked but put up with because they loved doing them. Reclaim your life!

3. Goal Setting; set a daily goal, something that excites and inspires you. It doesn’t need to be anything huge, or for it to take up a lot of time or money; you could take an exercise class or DVD, read a chapter of a self improvement book, learn to play an instrument, learn a foreign language, anything that will stretch you and move you away from the boredom of the daily grind.
4. Time management; organize your time so that you can achieve a realistic amount of work or complete a sensible amount of tasks in one day. Don’t set unrealistic goals, or you will be setting yourself to fail before you begin. 

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and delegate to co-workers or family members, if and when you can. If you have large goals, then chop them down into bite sized pieces, analyse what it would take to get through each step and then do it! 

Don’t forget to celebrate your achievements too, we spend so much time with our eyes on the horizon we rarely stop, take stock and enjoy the fruits of our labour. So stop right now and give yourself a pat on the back for all the great things you have done, especially those that seemed so impossible at the time.

Take this knowledge with you and the next time something appears insurmountable recall and take strength from those previous times, know that you can do it!

5. Look at the world through the eyes of a child; remember the innocent wonder and delight of the simplest things. Take a walk through your local park, have a picnic, stop and listen to the birds singing, the wind blowing through the trees, catch raindrops on your tongue, jump in puddles, take your socks and shoes off and walk barefoot in the long grass. 

Even if it is just for half an hour, sit and listen to your favourite music, dance around the room. 

Go within and meditate, get to know the real you, and learn to love yourself for the special unique human being you are. 

Be spontaneous, adventurous, open to the synchronicity of life, live your life creatively intune with the universe.

10 Easy Steps to performing a Self Indian Head massage

There are so many benefits associated with massage, unless there is a medical reason not to do so, I think it is something which should become an integral part of our regular routine, whether this is self massage or working on another, certainly for anyone who does any kind of repetitive work which puts strain on particular areas of their upper body it should be something which is fitted in every day. As in the long run it will improve concentration and productivity it is far from being a waste of time. 

In some very lucky workplaces this is recognised, and is a service which is provided for their employees. Even for anyone who is at home or has limited mobility if it is approved by their doctor it will improve the quality of their life.

On an emotional and psychological level, it is carving some time out each day for self care and that is something which many of us neglect to do. It is only when we are operating at our best that we can in turn give our best for those who depend on us. 

Self massage creates a period of time to go within and connect deeply with yourself, to tune into what your body needs and to release the cares and worries, the stress and strain of the day. It can become a wonderful form of meditation for those who struggle to meditate in the more traditional ways.

Massage can be a great way to wake up, loosen up and start the day, to break up your daily routine or a relaxing way to finish your day and to aid sleeping.


Creating the right space in which to prepare is very important;

Once seated comfortably I begin by clearing my mind and dropping myself into a deep meditative state. I do this by slowing my breathing, breathing deeply into my stomach area. As I breath in I bring in positive energy, as I breathe out I release negative energy and the stress and strain of the day. 

I then run Reiki through myself, as this is flowing; opening me up and allowing me to be more receptive to the upcoming massage 

I begin a progressive relaxation technique. Beginning with my toes I tense up with the in breath and release and relax with the out breath. Working upwards through each of the muscle groups in my body until I reach my head.

For me sound and scent is an important trigger for visualisation so I tend to ‘theme’ these according to what I am doing. 

I then visualise myself in a beautiful Zen garden, seated under a cherry blossom tree with the petals falling gently around me. I have a Cherry Blossom scented candle and I play an Indian Head Massage Therapy CD, I find these are enough to trigger a deep state of relaxation.

Massage Instructions

Self massage can be broken down into ten easy steps, unless stated below if you aim for about one minute on each step that should provide you with a good overall massage.

1. When including the use of oil in your treatment pour about one table spoonful of your chosen oil into the palm of your hand and then transfer this to the crown on your head.

2.  Now pour another table spoonful into your hand, this time rubbing both hands together to evenly distribute the oil. 

With your hands at either side of your head massage the oil into your hair working towards the crown area. 

Work towards the front and rear of the head until the oil has been evenly distributed over the complete surface of your head.

3. Using the pads of your fingers and thumbs (not nails) massage all over your head, this action will create warmth and friction and will begin the relaxation process in your head muscles.

4. This time move through the hair by gripping large clumps of hair by the root and tugging it gently but firmly from side to side. Keep your knuckles close to your scalp while doing this, this action will help to increase the flexibility across your scalp.

5. Now place the heel of your hands against your temple area and apply firm pressure as you make slow large circular movements.

6. Now we move down to the neck area, so with your head tilted forward squeeze and roll the muscles at the back of your neck using alternate hands. 

Begin at the base of the skull and work downwards repeating this process several times.

7. Now position your thumbs on either side of the base of your skull, this is just under the area known as the occiput. Using a firm movements rub in a  circular fashion.

8. Now moving onto the shoulder area begin with your left upper shoulder, or the one you have best mobility in, and squeeze the muscle tissue near the neck.

Move along the full length of your shoulder, down your upper arm and finishing at your elbow. 

Repeat this step twice more and then move onto your other shoulder and arm.

9. Still working in the same area using your right hand palm on the base of the left hand side of your neck, rub firmly downwards along the your shoulder and upper arm until you reach your elbow. 

When you have repeated this twice more move to your left side and use your right palm to complete the process. 

This technique will aid with the removal of toxins as well as improving muscle tone, mobility and increase the circulation in that area.

10. Now we come to the end of your self-massage and we finish by gently rubbing both hands over your whole head and onto your face. 

Take a few minutes now to get your bearings maybe enjoy a glass of water and gently stretch your neck, shoulders and arms before you stand up and move around.

Massage Oils

If you wish to work with massage oils below are several you may wish to try:

·         Sweet almond oil

·         Groundnut oil

·         Jojoba oil

·         Avocado oil

·         Coconut oil

·         Grapeseed oil

Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil is one of the most popular and easily available base oils to find and work with. This pale yellow oil comes warm pressed from the kernels of the sweet almond tree is very high in nutrients such as unsaturated fatty acids, proteins and vitamin A,B,D and E. 

It has a warming effect on the body and useful for stimulating hair growth as well as easing muscular pain and tightness.

It is also a natural sun block filtering out up to 25% of the sun’s rays although it should never be used solely for this. It is important to look for the warm pressed variety and not the refined type. Best places to buy this oil are chemists, health stores or aromatherapy suppliers.

Groundnut oil

As Groundnut oil is derived from peanuts care must be taken to check with the person you are working on for any nut allergies or sensitivities, also for yourself as well. 

Groundnut oil which is most readily available is quite often very refined, so again it is better to go directly to a health store or aromatherapy supplier to purchase the unrefined variety. 

This oil has a nutty odour and also contains very high levels of vitamin E which makes it a good choice to use for soothing the skin, especially if someone is suffering from sunburn.

If you choose to work with this oil for massage it is best to blend it in equal parts with sweet almond oil.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba is not actually oil based, but is in fact a liquid wax, this clear and odourless ‘oil’ can either be used neat or blended with other base oils. 

Jojoba is extracted from the beans of an evergreen plant which is found in South America. 

The substance extracted from the beans very closely resemblance the natural sebum found in your own body. When it interacts with the sebum if becomes an emulsifier which has the ability to unblock the pores of the skin and release ground in dirt. 

As it also contains myristic acid it has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Avocado oil

Avocado oil is rich in fatty acids, beta- carotene and Vitamin E as it penetrates and regenerates the skin very easily it makes this oil a good choice to use. 

High quality cold pressed Avocado oil should be thick, tacky and a bright Emerald green in colour. If you find some that is pale yellow in colour then it is has been made using refined oil and is a much poorer quality with little therapeutic benefits. 

Good quality Avocado oil tends to be expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Coconut oil 

This is popular oil which is often used in the Southern parts of India traditionally in Springtime. The oil is obtained by using solvent extraction on the dried flesh of the coconut.  This can cause skin sensitivity in those with delicate skin so care needs to be taken if choosing this oil. 

As coconut oil is semi solid at room temperature it needs to be liquefied by standing in warm water for a few minutes before use. 

This oil is odourless which makes it a good carrier oil to blend with essential oils as it doesn’t overpower their natural fragrance.

Grapeseed oil

Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes as its name suggests. Due to its offensive smell it isn’t readily available in its unrefined form, however, if you wish to increase the vitamin content and health benefits it can be mixed with 10% of the neat unrefined oil. 

Grapeseed oil in its refined state is virtually odourless and a pale green in appearance.
